Preventative Healthcare Programs

Thorough examinations are important for your pet's health. We provide general wellness evaluations as well as office examinations. In-House ECG

Oakwood Veterinary Service uses an electrocardiogram to assist in monitoring surgical procedures as well as for evaluating your pet's cardiac health. ECG results as well as radiographs can be sent to a licensed veterinary cardiologist for further consultation and advanced treatment options.

In-House Laboratory Testing

Monitoring blood work is important for minimizing the risks during surgical procedures as well as aiding in the differential of ailments and disease. Oakwood has an in-house hematology and urinalysis laboratory for quick and accurate results.







Therapeutic Blood Monitoring

Oakwood partners with a veterinary reference laboratory to monitor chronic conditions and therapeutic drug levels to provide us with the information to effectively manage your pet's condition.

Therapeutic drug testing can include, but not limited to:

  • ACTH Stimulation
  • SDMA testing (A new enzyme test that detects early onset of kidney disease).

In-house therapeutic diagnostics include but not limited to:

Surgical Services

Cesarean Section, Ovariohysterectomy (Spay), Orchectomy (Neuter), Onchyectomy (Declaw), Mass removal, Hernia Repair, and case by case emergency procedures. Each pet is thoroughly monitored while under anesthesia by a trained technician. Pre-anesthetic blood work is a requirement to ensure your pet does not have any conditions that could complicate their anesthetic risk. The Oakwood staff works to ensure that your pet has minimal risks during any surgical procedure he or she may undergo.



Anesthesia

We tailor our anesthetic protocol to every patient and use the safest techniques available for sedation, IV anesthesia, and general anesthesia. During anesthesia, under a doctor's supervision, a trained veterinary technician, constantly monitors and graphs your pet's vital statistics and anesthetic status. We monitor your pet's arterial oxygen level, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and core body temperature. We also apply heat therapy to ensure a safe body temperature is maintained throughout the procedure. We also place an IV catheter and provide intravenous fluids, which provides access for emergencies and helps maintain patient stability under anesthesia.

Dentistry

When tartar builds up on the surface of your pet's teeth, it is time for a dental cleaning and examination. Oakwood offers routine dental procedures where a trained technician scales your pet's teeth with an ultrasonic scaler to eliminate tartar and plaque. Dental procedures also include a polish and fluoride treatment as well as a oral examination by a veterinarian.

Microchipping

A microchip is a miniature transponder about the size of a grain of rice that has a specific registration number . That registration number corresponds to a databank that contains a pet and owner information. In the event that a pet is lost, a microchip allows them to be reunited with their families. Oakwood offers microchip placement and registration, which lasts for the lifetime of the pet.

Cold Laser Therapy

Cold laser therapy is a newer technique that uses a beam of light to stimulate damaged cells and promote healing. Cold laser therapy is commonly used to treat joint injuries, ligament and tendon injuries, sprains, post-trauma wounds, post-surgical incisions, arthritis, nerve injuries and more.

Pain Management

Pain management is vital to your pet's recovery. Each patient receives an individualized pain treatment plan that is specifically tailored to your pet's health status. We utilize a balanced/multimodal pain management techniques, which means we combine drugs together to get a better effect and utilize lower dosages to get better results. We use local blocks for procedures like dental extractions and declaws. We consider pain reduction a high priority during surgical procedures and provide pain management before, during, and after surgery. We also can provide pain management protocols for patients with chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis and cancer.

Pharmacy

Complete with an in-house pharmacy, our hospital can fill and supply our patients with the medications they need before they even leave the facility. Our in-house pharmacy allows for quick and convenient prescription processing. If there is something Oakwood does not have in the pharmacy, we also work side by side with a veterinary pharmaceutical compounding company that can customize your pet's medication based on their individual needs.

Every month Oakwood Veterinary Service offers "Spaw Day,” a day dedicated to pampering your dog. Special packages for bathing and other basic services are offered during this day of the month.

Behavioral Consultations

The staff at Oakwood is available to help give advice on positive reinforcement training to order to help control common negative behaviors. Our technicians and doctors stress the importance of socialization and proper obedience training at an early age. Your pet's behavior can affect their stress level during routine examinations as well as life at home and their own safety and that of others. We also have several trusted referral behaviorists/institutions for basic obedience classes or more advanced behavioral analysis. Health Certificates and Coggin’s Testing

A health certificate is a certificate of Veterinary inspection that is required for all interstate travel and some advertised/organized events. It also requires an annual blood test called “Coggins” test to check for equine infectious anemia in horses. This test is required for sale, out of state transport, or any organized events.

Dentistry

At Oakwood Veterinary Service, we routinely schedule dentistry days in conjunction with Chenoweth Equine Dentistry, IAED Certified Equine Dentists. All horses can benefit from routine dental care regardless of age, use, or body condition. We recommend dental care every 6-12 months.





Allergy Testing

Is a simple blood test for allergen identification, followed by immunotherapy treatment. This testing will check for regional, environmental, and food related allergies.

Preventative Care Programs

It is important to test for internal parasites, physically examine and booster horse’s vaccinations yearly to help prevent the transfer of diseases or internal parasites. We offer various vaccine programs for your horse. Horse’s exposure and risk of infectious diseases will determine the need for certain vaccinations or de-worming programs.

Lameness exams

Veterinarians can provide information regarding lameness or potential lameness by evaluating confirmation, movement, medical history, past performance, and existing medical conditions. Exam includes but not limited to hands-on physical exam, hoof testers to the feet, movement exam, flexions, diagnostic nerve blocks, radiographs, and ultrasound.





Pre-Purchase Exams

Evaluation for the presence of physical abnormalities or lameness should be part of every purchase evaluation. This exam can consists of but not limited to a complete physical on the horse, full lameness evaluation, complete blood panel, and drug screening. The extent of the exam will be determined by the buyer and veterinarian.





Emergency Care

Oakwood Veterinary Service not only offers an ambulatory service for routine preventative maintenance procedures and investigation of health concerns; but also has 24 hour equine emergency care available.

Cold Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is a painless application of a coherent light. The laser beam stimulates cells and tissue to be healthy. It also reduces inflammation so that healing can begin and a great tool to help minimize the pain of many chronic conditions like arthritis.

Reproductive

Our doctors are able to perform a reproductive ultrasound which can look for abnormalities as well as help track your mare’s reproductive cycle to maximize conception. We also have the capabilities of breeding your mare as well as small volume lavages.

Surgery

Oakwood is able to complete minor surgeries in the field such as castrations and also has the facility to haul in for more in-depth procedures. Advanced or invasive surgeries, such as colic, will be referred to area referral centers.

Anesthesia

We provide different levels of sedation and also TIVA (Total Intravenous Anesthesia) for minor procedures such as lumpectomies, wound care, laceration repair, dental procedures and castrations that are done in the field or in our equine clinic.

Pain Management

Our veterinarians are trained to recognize the signs of discomfort that may mean your horse is in pain. They can identify and address common problems such as dental pain, gastrointestinal pain (colic, ulcers) and orthopedic/muscular pain. They will provide the correct treatment and dosages. They will discuss benefits of medications and the side effects. The doctor will show you how to administer the medication or treatment whether it be simple physical therapy or a complicated drug protocol. Our doctors will provide follow up on your questions and concerns.

Endoscopy

A procedure using a small camera on the end of a tube, called an endoscope, to take images of the body as it is passed along the desired surface (i.e. esophagus, airway). Upper and lower airway endoscopy involves examining the airways (trachea) and pharyngeal regions, including the guttural pouches.

Diagnostic Imaging rad/u/s

We have the ability to perform diagnostic radiographs on the farm as well as an ultrasound to look at soft tissue.
