Meet the Staff at Oakwood Veterinary Service

Oakwood Veterinary Service is dedicated to keeping your pets healthy with preventative medicine, diagnostics and surgery. Through extensive teamwork, we strive to maintain an inviting and compassionate environment, providing superior patient care and client services. We view your pets as extensions of our family and celebrate the human-animal bond. With years of combined experience, our veterinarians are ready to provide you and your pets with first-class quality health care.

Oakwood Veterinary Service has been at its present location in Colona, IL since 1995. We are proud to serve patients living throughout the quad cities and surrounding areas. Our practice focus is companion animals; this includes dogs, cats, and horses.

Meet Our Veterinarians

Dr. Jaime Miller

Dr. Miller is a native of St. Louis, Missouri. She grew up surrounded by animals and began riding and showing horses at the age of 14. She attended Truman University and received a B.S. in Animal Science. She graduated with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University in May of 2005. Dr. Miller began working at Oakwood Veterinary Service immediately after graduating and assumed ownership in January, 2010. Her professional interests include small animal surgery, behavior, ultrasound, and equine reproduction. Her family consists of her husband, daughter, and son, along with dogs, cats, horses, sheep, and chickens.

In her free time, Dr. Miller enjoys riding and showing reining horses, and spending time outdoors. "I enjoy going to work every day, and working with such a committed and caring staff. I believe I can enrich the lives of my clients by enriching the lives of their pets. I try to make sure they live a long, healthy, happy, life."

Dr. Richard Rock

Dr. Rock received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan in 1971. For 17 years, he served as a resident veterinarian at a local horse farm owned by Tish Hewitt. Dr. Rock was also employed by the State of Illinois as a racing official at Quad City Downs. Dr. Rock assumed ownership of Oakwood Veterinary Service from February 1995 through December 2009. He and his wife, Jan, operate Huntermark Farm, a hunter-jumper training facility and riding school in Coal Valley, IL. Together, they have a daughter, Rachel, as well as numerous horses and Jack Russell Terriers.

Dr. Jane Fixen

Dr. Fixen is a native of Independence, Missouri. She attended the University of Missouri- Columbia, earning a B.S. in Animal Science in 1991 and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. Following graduation, she joined Oakwood Veterinary Service in May of 1996. Her professional interests include small animal medicine, preventative care, owner education and pain management. She is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management.

In her free time, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband, Lee, and two daughters.

Dr. Deke Carls

Dr. Carls of Port Byron, IL grew up working with western performance horses. He graduated with a B.A. in biology from Augustana College and then earned a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine in May of 2009. Deke joined the team at Oakwood Veterinary Service in June of 2009. His professional interests are in equine medicine and surgery. He especially enjoys lameness exams, diagnostic imaging, and pre-purchase exams. He is a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, American Veterinary Medical Association, and Illinois Veterinary Medical Association.

In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and son, and their pets (dogs, cats, and horses). He also enjoys photography and volunteering with the local fire department. Deke also has a strong interest in Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue.

Meet Our Staff

Practice Manager

Jessica has been with Oakwood Veterinary Services since August of 2016. She moved to Colona, Illinois from Cape Coral, Florida with over twelve years of experience as a veterinary technician and most recently was the Lead Veterinary Technician/Supervisor for a busy emergency hospital and general day practice. Jessica received her associates degree in 2009 in Medical Assisting and continues to pursue her certification through the Veterinary Hospital Mangers Association. Jessica grew up showing American Saddlebreds and Hunter/Jumpers throughout the U.S. and went on to own two boarding and training facilities, where she learned her love of entrepreneurship and business. In her spare time, Jessica enjoys spending time outdoors, refurbishing antique furniture and cuddling with her two dogs, Molly and Burney.


Judy has been with Oakwood Veterinary Service since 2004. Her true passion is riding horses. She has been riding horses for 35 years, with her main discipline being dressage. She enjoys many horse events. Judy also loves to spend time with her two children, Jody and Michael, and her husband, Dan. "I enjoy the animals and clients that come to Oakwood Vet Service."


Debbie has been with Oakwood Veterinary Service since June 2011. Debbie is a native of the Quad Cities and currently lives in Moline with her husband and two dogs - Jackson, a loveable lab mix and Tallie, a sweet little Gordon Setter. She enjoys having the opportunity to work with people and their pets.

Veterinary Technician

Stephanie has been a veterinary technician since 2004. She Joined Oakwood Veterinary Service in March 2008. Her primary position is the equine technician, but also enjoys small animal care. She currently lives with her husband Matt, son Myles, 2 dogs, and 1 outdoor cat.

In her spare time, Stephanie enjoys showing her paint horse Chex, watching her husband compete at stock car races, dog sitting, renovating homes, and spending time with family and friends. “Being in the veterinary field gives me a chance to share my passion and love for animals with each and every patient I see.”

Veterinary Technician

Nicole has worked at Oakwood Veterinary Service since December 2011. She is a native of Minnesota and grew up with her mother and brother on a hobby farm, surrounded by horses, sheep, pot bellied pigs, chickens, dogs, and her favorite cats! She has always had a love for animals. "My first visit at Oakwood was with my cat, Callie, and watching how the staff cared not only for her but for me. It made me realize just how much happiness you can feel by helping animals get well. I am excited to be with such an amazing and caring staff."

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and attending her sons sporting events. She has 3 cats (Callie and Elsa and Max) and two crazy dogs (Daisy and Mallie), who she wouldn't trade for the world.

Veterinary Technician

Taylor has been in the Veterinary field since 2014 and recently joined Oakwood Veterinary Service in June 2016. She has a true passion for animals and a special interest in the equine field. She plans on continuing her education and becoming a Certified Veterinary Technician with the plans of specializing in equine. Taylor in her free time enjoys spending time with her daughter, family and friends, watching dirt track races, and riding horses.

Veterinary Technician

Born and raised in Seatonville, Il. Moved to AZ in 2011 where she attended Pima Medical Institute. Attended their Veterinary Technician program and graduated in 2014. Ashley enjoys hiking with her two dogs, Baloo and Max.

Veterinary Assistant

Liz has worked at Oakwood Veterinary Service since December 2011. She attends Western Illinois University and is working towards her Master’s in biology. She hopes to attend Veterinary School someday. She is looking to work with horses and small animals when she graduates. She enjoys taking care of her dog named Skippy.

Liz likes to spend her spare time riding and caring for horses at a barn near her home in Tinley Park, IL. Some of her other hobbies include volunteering at a therapeutic horseback riding center for special needs children, camping, watching the White Sox, and spending time with family and friends.

Veterinary Assistant/Receptionist

Kyla started working for Oakwood Veterinary Service in March 2015. She graduated in December of 2014 as a Vet Tech Assistant. She really enjoys interacting with the clients, but her favorite part is taking care of their family members. Kyla plans to go back to school and further her education in large and small animal medicine. Kyla has 3 German shepherds and 1 chihuahua. In her free time, Kyla is either training her German Shepherds or doing photography.

Buddy Chips “Buddy”
Hospital Laboratory Supervisor

Another important position here at Oakwood Veterinary Service is our Laboratory Supervisor. Buddy has been working here since May of 2011. Buddy has proven to be a valuable asset to the Oakwood team and without him our Hospital Lab could not run properly. As supervisor; he keeps all technicians and veterinarians in line, oversees all food consumption, pharmacy inventory control, and most importantly, he promotes a positive work environment. Buddy is very dedicated to his job and rarely leaves his post in the hospital lab, but occasionally you may see him greeting clients in the reception area.
