Dr. Carls of Port Byron, IL grew up working with western performance horses. He graduated with a B.A. in biology from Augustana College and then earned a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine in May of 2009. Deke joined the team at Oakwood Veterinary Service in June of 2009. His professional interests are in equine medicine and surgery. He especially enjoys lameness exams, diagnostic imaging, and pre-purchase exams. He is a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, American Veterinary Medical Association, and Illinois Veterinary Medical Association.
In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and son, and their pets (dogs, cats, and horses). He also enjoys volunteering with the local fire department. Deke also has a strong interest in Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue.
